 DS Risk Warning: Weather

The Met Office has issued an Amber warning for part of our operating area and a Yellow warning for more rain. The latest anti-cyclone has been named Storm Bella - details below.

The Amber warning relates to: Bristol, North Somerset, Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.

Storm Bella will bring disruption to travel and utilities over parts of south and southeast England and south Wales between Saturday 26th at 22.00 hrs and Sunday 27th at 09:00 hrs.

As usual our advice is to ensure all drains, downpipes, gullies, etc, are clear of debris for free draining and any outdoor equipment brought in where possible or very securely weighted down. It may be opportune to also factor in timely pre and post inspections to check and double check afterwards that nothing requires urgent remedial attention.

We should expect:

Longer journey times and cancellations likely, as road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected

Some roads and bridges likely to close

Probably some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs

Flying debris is likely and could lead to Injuries or danger to life

Injuries and danger to life is likely from large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and properties

There is a good chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage

The extent of the Amber and Yellow warning areas can be found on a map here:

NB: Very strong southwesterly winds are expected for parts of south and southeast England and south Wales on Sunday morning. Inland gusts of 50-60 mph are likely with a few spots likely to see 60-70 mph for a time. Hills and particularly coasts exposed to the southwesterly winds will see a few gusts of 70-80 mph. In addition to the strong winds, a period of heavy, squally rain is expected and may prove an additional hazard.

All the best and a sigh of relief that tomorrow is calm.

DS Risk Warning: 28 March: Extinction Rebellion Demonstration ‘Sound the Alarms’ 10 - 4 pm

Hello all, Avon and Somerset Police have informed us of an ‘organised civil disobedience’ event that may take place today, Thursday 28th March, whereby members of Extinction Rebellion and possibly sympathisers are proposing to set off multiple [fire] alarms.  There is no known information on which buildings/when but the assumption is that they will target schools, institutions and public buildings. The Bristol Director Education and Skills has shared this scant information with Bristol schools and nothing more. We haven't heard that it has been distributed more widely so we do so just in case to our Agreement/SLA customers. Fire doesn't give notice of where and when it will occur so our best advice, unless you have a delay on the system that allows checking the status of the issue before the alarm sounders go live, is to take any activation seriously and evacuate. If it turns out to be a hoax, false activation, etc, why not log it as an alternative to your t...

DS Risk Warning: Health - Coronavirus/Covid 19

Hello all, We have been asked, and in the light of yesterday's Government announcement, please find our updated draft risk assessment to hopefully cover many of the issues you are now faced with to make provision for a restricted number of pupils in the categories described, while the majority are asked to stay at home. We appreciate this is a huge challenge and more explanation will be very helpful but it does represent an important contribution to helping flatten the curve of infection and protect the vulnerable as far as possible.  In the mix you have more issues to take into account and handle sensitively such as staff who live with the vulnerable, have vulnerabilities themselves, on top of those who indeed already have it themselves, who in the vast majority will shake it off over 7 days and will then be available for work and resistant to further infection, of course. Delegated Services Risk Warning: Weather; Snow and Ice

Hello all, I have just watched the local forecast with interest and await the Met Office web site catching up with it! What was said/shown has been updated with elements of more significance. It appears that there is now potential for snow showers to start across our patch from lunchtime but without major impact. As the afternoon goes on the showers look to then merge into longer spells of snow, which then in the evening becomes persistent somewhere along the M4 ish, and to the north of it before lessening off past midnight. NB: Accumulations estimates vary significantly from the light dusting to perhaps up to 8 cm with elevation. Timings are also in flux so we are advised to check again for updates on a regular basis. I will do this and keep you posted. On this basis a prompt get away at the end of the pupil day for all would look to be appropriate. At the moment I stick with 'curtain time' early Friday morning to see whether it's business as close to normal and on a...
