DS Risk Warning Weather: Wind and Flooding

 Hello all,


Building on Jo's earlier update that a Red Warning regarding the wind now covers some of our area, where the boundary shown to the wider Amber Warning area should be considered as a flexible and moving beast, please see the following information regarding the declaration of a Major Incident. 

Please note as well that some of you may be vulnerable to a storm surge with the tide, wind, rain and full rivers combining to cause potential problems. More below:

Storm Eunice has been declared a major incident by the Avon and Somerset Local Resilience Forum due to the potential for severe disruption.


A red weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for extremely strong winds between 7am and midday on Friday 18 February.


The storm has the potential to cause significant disruption and dangerous conditions along the length of the west coast of Somerset through the Bristol Channel and Severn Estuary into Gloucestershire.


The Environment Agency has issued a flood warning for Severn Beach and flood alerts for Porlock Weir, along the Severn between Avonmouth and Sharpness and along the Avon into Bristol. You can check your area's risk of flooding on their website.

There is also a risk of 90mph gusts of wind causing coastal flooding and affecting trees and temporary structures. This could cause disruption to the road and rail network, flights, power and communications systems with a high likelihood that both the M4 Prince of Wales bridge and the M48 Severn Bridge will be closed.


DS suspects the M5 Bridge over the Avon may also be an issue.


Members of the public are asked to avoid travelling on Friday morning wherever possible and to follow weather and travel bulletins on local radio or check on local media websites.

Travel information will also be shared by National Highways, Travel Somerset, Travel West or you can check with your local public transport provider.


Emergency services, local authorities, National Highways and other voluntary and statutory agencies are on stand-by to put well-rehearsed plans into place.


You can report trees fallen into a major road to National Highways and on local roads to your local authority.


Please call 999 if there is an immediate risk to safety such as a fallen live power cable.

Delegated Services Risk Warning: Whirlpool dryers recall

Hello all, If you have one of these you will have probably already spotted the warnings and concerns, but just in case the BBC are reporting today: The government is to issue an "unprecedented" recall notice of up to 500,000 Whirlpool tumble dryers which pose a fire safety risk. It comes four years after Whirlpool issued a warning after it found its Hotpoint, Creda and Indesit dryers had a fault which needed fixing. The fault was blamed for at least 750 fires over an 11-year period, according to the government. Whirlpool said safety was its "number one priority". It urged anyone still owning an affected to dryer to contact the company immediately on 0800 151 0905. A spokeswoman added: "In the meantime, anyone with an affected dryer that has not been modified  should unplug it and not use it  until the modification has been completed." An estimated 5.3 million dryers were sold in the UK, but it is thought up to 500,000 could still be in use. ...

DS Risk Warning: UK raises terror threat level to ‘severe’ following Vienna attack

  Home Secretary Priti Patel has confirmed the escalation of the UK terror threat level from "substantial" to "severe" following an attack in Vienna that left at least three dead. The change means that an attack on UK soil is now deemed "highly likely". The Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre has changed the UK terror threat level from substantial to severe. This is a precautionary measure and is not based on any specific threat. The potential is for UK based 'lone wolfs' to be emboldened to take action themselves which could take place anywhere in the UK. We are asked to continue to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police on 999 or the anti-terrorist hotline: 0800 789 321.
