DS Risk Warning Weather: Wind and Flooding

Building on Jo's earlier update that a Red Warning regarding the wind now covers some of our area, where the boundary shown to the wider Amber Warning area should be considered as a flexible and moving beast, please see the following information regarding the declaration of a Major Incident. 

Please note as well that some of you may be vulnerable to a storm surge with the tide, wind, rain and full rivers combining to cause potential problems. More below:

Storm Eunice has been declared a major incident by the Avon and Somerset Local Resilience Forum due to the potential for severe disruption.


A red weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for extremely strong winds between 7am and midday on Friday 18 February.


The storm has the potential to cause significant disruption and dangerous conditions along the length of the west coast of Somerset through the Bristol Channel and Severn Estuary into Gloucestershire.


The Environment Agency has issued a flood warning for Severn Beach and flood alerts for Porlock Weir, along the Severn between Avonmouth and Sharpness and along the Avon into Bristol. You can check your area's risk of flooding on their website.

There is also a risk of 90mph gusts of wind causing coastal flooding and affecting trees and temporary structures. This could cause disruption to the road and rail network, flights, power and communications systems with a high likelihood that both the M4 Prince of Wales bridge and the M48 Severn Bridge will be closed.


DS suspects the M5 Bridge over the Avon may also be an issue.


Members of the public are asked to avoid travelling on Friday morning wherever possible and to follow weather and travel bulletins on local radio or check on local media websites.

Travel information will also be shared by National Highways, Travel Somerset, Travel West or you can check with your local public transport provider.


Emergency services, local authorities, National Highways and other voluntary and statutory agencies are on stand-by to put well-rehearsed plans into place.


You can report trees fallen into a major road to National Highways and on local roads to your local authority.


Please call 999 if there is an immediate risk to safety such as a fallen live power cable.

Priority Wed, 26 Feb, 20 Hello all, Looking at how things are progressing and supporting you with your many enquiries can we suggest, if you haven't done so already, a communication to your community and staff? The content would be to reassure that you are following the national and local advice. You could then copy and paste the advice from yesterday that includes the list of Category 1 and Category 2 locations and the list of Italian lock down villages. If you can you can go on to say nobody has returned from lock down areas anywhere in the world. Some have returned from areas where the advice is clear on being vigilant in case symptoms appear. If that were to be the case they will then follow the self isolate advice, etc. it would be sensible to recognise that the situation is very dynamic and could already be changing as you send your communication. You will update them on your position if anything material changes, but they can also keep up to date ...

Hello all, Thanks for the feedback on the model risk assessment. We're improving on it and will reissue for next week. Any other comments most welcome. Helpfully a number of you commented on the return to work after an illness content of the cover email. We agree, without testing it won't be possible to know what the illness has been and it is perfectly possible that returners may need to self isolate again if symptoms occur again, just in case. Hopefully both testing of those with it and those who may have had it will accelerate to aid the confidence around returning to a form of normal. We heard yesterday that the Government hopes effort by all will see the worst behind us by the end of June. However, a later in the year return of the virus is in the planning. There is also work going on in terms of isolation fatigue. We don't seem to be doing well as a society in terms of not panic buying!
